Debian Wheezy PXE server

I’m writing this entry because some of the existing info online is either outdated, incomplete, or doesn’t suite my specific needs.

Goal:  Create a Debian server that provides DHCP and PXE boot services of multiple to specific hosts on the same network.  This is not for running thin clients, this article is for imaging new systems (though that is a fun idea for a future article!).

Requirements:  Debian Wheezy or other compatible server with plenty of free space, and an additional server/computer on the same network (or virtual network) as the Debian server.  If you’re using something other than Debian Wheezy, I can’t assure you the packages will be the same and configured the same way.  This is Linux, after all.

Magento is a freely available shopping cart / ecommerce solution in production use all over the internet.  In this article, I’ll be outlining the steps to install Magento Community edition in Debian Squeeze.  It’s really quite simple if you’re using Apache2.  While NginX is supported by the latest release of Magento, the steps to install using NginX won’t be outlined here, but may be in another article in the future!

Debian Squeeze: Installing Google Chrome

If you’re running Debian Squeeze or a related distro as your primary desktop system, you will more than likely want to browse the web at some point.

If you elected the graphic install option, and enabled the GUI by default, you should be armed with a few web browsers:  Iceweasel and Epiphany.  While these are excellent browsers in the open source community, Google Chrome also enjoys great support in the Linux realm.  These instructions should work just about the same for any Debian-based distro, such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

Fun With Debian

What’s fun about Debian Linux?  Everything.  The amount of packages available for Debian Stable, currently Sqeeze, is astounding.  Stability is second to none, in my opinion, and uptime is measured in months and years.  In fact, in most production Debian systems I help manage, the number 1 cause of server downtime is hardware related.  In fact, I’d say that’s the only cause of downtime for quite a few production environments.  If you keep Debian patched and secure, your administration experience will be blissful.
