If you’re running Debian Squeeze or a related distro as your primary desktop system, you will more than likely want to browse the web at some point.

If you elected the graphic install option, and enabled the GUI by default, you should be armed with a few web browsers:  Iceweasel and Epiphany.  While these are excellent browsers in the open source community, Google Chrome also enjoys great support in the Linux realm.  These instructions should work just about the same for any Debian-based distro, such as Ubuntu and Linux Mint.

Centos 6 in 3DIn this article, I’m going to be outlining the steps to install and configure a complete web server on a base install of CentOS 6.  (Which should be compatible with Scientific Linux 6 as well as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6)

I personally don’t prefer to install package groups relating to “LAMP” or similar during initial installation because I’m simply too lazy to review each and every package that is included in those groups, and what the dependencies are. By installing the required packages using yum, this allows you to install just the software you’re looking for, without worrying about dependencies. This software stack is time tested; we’ll install on CentOS’s latest release, and test a few popular applications while we’re at it! (more…)

In this article, I’m going to be outlining the steps to install and configure a complete web server on a base install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server edition.

Fun With Debian

What’s fun about Debian Linux?  Everything.  The amount of packages available for Debian Stable, currently Sqeeze, is astounding.  Stability is second to none, in my opinion, and uptime is measured in months and years.  In fact, in most production Debian systems I help manage, the number 1 cause of server downtime is hardware related.  In fact, I’d say that’s the only cause of downtime for quite a few production environments.  If you keep Debian patched and secure, your administration experience will be blissful.

Linux in production

It’s 2012.  Linux will be turning 21 this fall!  It’s hard to imagine computing life before Linux in comparison to the modern age.  GNU/Linux has revolutionized our entire society; countless devices run on Linux.  In fact, I’m writing this post from a Linux distro installed on my laptop, and the server this site is hosted on runs Linux.  I’m fortunate enough to have a great career; at work I get to play with Linux all day long!
